1st Grade — Orton Gillingham Lesson — Concept R:

Welcome to Ms. Cervoni’s first grade reading intervention class. This Orton Gillingham intervention group meets five days per week for thirty minutes. These students have IEPs and are English-learners. In my classroom, it is important to model language as well as develop vocabulary. My small-group instruction is direct, explicit and works best with immediate feedback. We are a responsive classroom and my students understand the importance of following an “I do, we do" structure . This one-to-one teacher to student structure has helped me learn so much about my students strengths and needs. I love being able to support them in these foundational years — watching them grow their decoding, encoding, and fluency skills.

Work Samples & Progress:

Orton Gillingham Lesson — Vowel Intensive:

Short vowel sounds are critical to drill into English learners, as many vowel sounds are not the same in other languages. We do this phonemic awareness activity once per week to warm up our CVC knowledge and short vowel sound memory. The students especially appreciate when I hand them the marker to write on the whiteboard, which you do not see here. I give ample wait time after I ask a question, ensuring that my all students in the class have time to formulate an answer, hand-raised or not! In this video, we talk about our spelling rules, specifically the “C/K Rule" where the letter C goes with a, o, or u, and the letter K goes with i or e!
